Government Innovation Lab (GIL) announces SDG Challenge Cup 2020 which aims to empower inspiring individuals, teams and organizations from Balochistan who have founded or able to lead startups and businesses with a mission to create civic and social impact. GIL will evaluate your applications and provide grants to innovative projects falling under the theme of the challenge cup that are highly impactful, effective, cost-efficient, and sustainable and have the potential to scale.The SDG Challenge Cup amount will be PKR 200,000 each for the two winners. The winner of the SDG Challenge Cup will work in collaboration with GIL, UNDP, Government of Balochistan and its technical partners. GIL successfully concluded a two days Design Thinking Workshop held between 29th-30th September 2020. The workshop was attended by technical teams of 6 Line Departments, Government of Balochistan, each one forming a team with GIL developers and applying design thinking process on problems related to the theme of the workshop \”How to improve service delivery and governance\”. The workshop was concluded with interactive prototypes prepared by each team and evaluated by GIL Social Sector Specialist, Dr. Sanaullah Panezai. Dr. Sanaullah Panezai shared closing remarks to the audience with the aim to help the Government of Balochistan in improving Service Delivery and Governance through digital interventions. Trainer and Facilitator Arslan Ahmed thanked the audience for active participation and shared the plan of future interventions by GIL.

GIL held an executive Technical Committee Meeting attended by senior officials from Government of Balochistan, UNDP and University of Balochistan on 24th September 2020 at Syndicate Hall, University of Balochistan (UOB). The meeting was chaired by Vice-Chancellor UOB, Dr Shafiq Ur Rehman. Team Lead GIL, Dr Waheed Noor along with GIL Experts Dr Sanaullah Panezai and Prof. Jahanvash Karim presented the keynote. Representatives from Quetta Water and Supply Authority (QWASA) Mr Imran Hameed Durrani, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) Mr Agha Imran Shah, Colleges Higher & Technical Education Department (CH&TE) Mr Syed Mehrab Shah and Mr Aamir Naeem, Balochistan Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Engr. G. R. Jamali and Ainuddin Agha, Quetta Development Authority (QDA) Mr Zia Ur Rehman and UNDP Ms Shazia Aman and Mr Habibullah Khan were present. Discussion took place over several service delivery challenges faced by Balochistan and Quetta city in particular. The representatives of Government sectors appreciated the GIL interventions and supported the idea of prototyping, testing and deploying smart solutions. An MoU signing in the presence of VC UOB was carried out between GIL and two Government sectors; QDA and CH&TE for cooperation in improving service delivery and governance for these departments.

Secretary Colleges Higher & Technical Education Department, Mr. Hashim Ghilzai paid visit to Government Innovation Lab and reviewed the current interventions for Government of Balochistan on Friday, 18th September 2020. He applauded the services provided from time to time and showed interest in acquiring services from GIL. Team Lead Dr. Waheed presented the documentary with complete briefing and introduction to successful projects. Social Sector Specialist, Dr. Sanaullah Panezai presented the concept notes and project proposals to Mr.Hashim Ghilzai. GIL development team including Jawad Ahmed, Saud Khan, Sajjad Ahmad, Sadia Lakho, Azam Jan and Hafsa Durrani presented a briefing about the features, modules, and components of GIL interventions with Government of Balochistan.

UNDP Balochistan signed Letter of Agreement

UNDP Balochistan signed a Letter of Agreement (LoA) on 17 September 2020 with the University of Balochistan for content development, awareness research, and strategy development around different sectors for achieving SDGs to support and help GoB and Balochistan for the 2030 agenda at a global level. Mr. Zulfiqar Durrani, Provincial Chief UNDP Balochistan, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. Shafiq Ur Rehman, Registrar Wali Rehman, Director QAAD UOB Prof. Dr. Zahoor Bazai, Prof Jahanvash Kareem, Dr. Sanaullah Panezai, Director ORIC Dr. Waheed Noor, Dr. Muzamil Bukhari Manager ORIC and Muhammad Mari Communication Specialist UNDP were present at the ceremony. VC UoB and UNDP Provincial Chief highlighted the strengths and support of UoB in developing Balochistan and making it relevant in the national and global scenario.

Government Innovation Lab on Friday 4th September 2020 was visited by highly esteemed Parliamentary Secretary Health, Government of Balochistan #Ms #Rubaba #Buledi, Chief of Sections SDGs Planning & Development Department #Mr #Arif #Shah, UNDP Provincial Representative Sub Office Quetta #Mr #Zulfiqar #Durrani, Vice Chancellor University of Balochistan #Dr #ShafiqurRehman and other officials from UNDP Pakistan. Dr. Waheed Noor and Dr. Sanaullah Panezai on behalf of GIL welcomed the guests with keynote and asked the Fellow ICT Developers to introduce the prototypes and software solutions innovatively designed to address service delivery challenges for Government of Balochistan. Miss Rubaba Buledi lauded the efforts being made on behalf of University of Balochistan and UNDP on execution of extremely efficient solutions. Mr Arif Shah expressed his opinions on initiatives like GIL which are bringing substantial change in automation of service delivery at Government Departments. He presented his motivation and vision for a brighter Baluchistan through technology. Mr Zulfiqar Durrani highly appreciated the welcoming response of Government of Balochistan in owning and taking up Government Innovation Lab as a framework for digitizing Balochistan. In the end Dr Shafiq Ur Rehman paid attribute to contribution of P&DD and UNDP Pakistan for providing opportunities for the youth to lead the conventional challenges with modern solutions.

Government Innovation Lab has established a fixed duration youth apprenticeship/fellowship program which provide resources, space and time to students/youth to join hands with peers to ‘do’ innovation. Seventh-day amplification factor (A7) of Worsak Kanok-Nukulchai is a great tool to look into growth of new cases including silent infections spreading the virus, which is always challenging as we only know those who are reported positive. The end of spread (or first wave of the epidemic atleast) can easily be forecasted if we observe a stable A7 = 1.00. KPK looks promoising with A7=1.33 calculated for 1st May 2020, followed by Punjab having A7=1.57.
